What are the appraisal ratings and what do they mean?

This is an example of an appraisal rating scale. Your company’s rating scale may be different from this example.

5—Exemplary

Performance is clearly distinguished; reflects superior effort and exceptional results and is evident by others.

4—Very Competent

Performance consistently meets and often significantly exceeds established expectations. Performance reflects a high degree of initiative and high quality results.

3—Competent

Performance consistently meets all job standards and expectations. Solid, all-around performance.

2—Needs Development

Performance may meet some, but does not consistently meet established job standards.  Individual requires counsel, guidance and supervision.  Performance improvement is necessary to demonstrate initiative and to attain competency in key areas of current position.  Action plan for improvement is mandatory. 1—Must be Improved

Performance in key areas is at an unacceptable level.  Performance improvement must be achieved to justify retention in position.  Action plan for improvement is mandatory. (contact HR)
